Impact on Sexual Harassment at Work Place





Introduction


Sexual harassments in work place can be described as wide range of physical and verbal unwelcome requests for sexual favors or conduct sexual nature behavior which makes a person offended and humiliated. Sexual harassments also notice as unfitting glance, rude jokes and sexual assault.

According to Wikipedia organizational sexual harassment is a type of harassment involving the use of explicit or implicit sexual overtones, including the unwelcome and inappropriate promise or rewards in exchange for sexual favors. 

Consequences of Sexual Harassment

There are innumerable negative impacts occurring in an organization due this untechnical problem. Some are as follows 

To the Victim 

  • Suffering from embarrassment 
  • Increase depression and stress 
  • Lost in moral 
  • Reduce motivation
  • Addicting to drugs and alcohol
  • Disinterested in employment
  • Leaving the job
  • Committing suicide

To the Organization  

  • Decrease the productivity
  • Deterioration of team work
  • Worker demotivation 
  • Increase absenteeism
  • Spreading bad reputation
  • Less in innovation
  • collapse performance

Social Impact

There are some short-term and long-term social impact due to work place sexual harassment. Some victims have to be rehabilitated. unemployment rate is increasing in society and some states government has to bear their welfare cost.  

International Statistics

As per the world bank blogs (2017) an extraordinary number of women are vulnerable to sexual abuse at work. Investigations had revealed 60% of the United State America women has been sexually intimidated. In European Union this percentage is 55. Also, the expert suspects more than 75% of the employed in the world had been subject to sexual harassment due to most cases are unreported.  

Sexual harassment is internationally recognized as a sex discrimination and violation of human right. Most of the countries around the world have legislated rules and regulations to stop the work place sexual harassment. Also, strong work place policies have been adopting by the organizations to mitigate this burning issue. Some organizations give training to their employees on this matter and some have made strong complaint process to protect the workers.

Conclusion

The employer has to take necessary steps to mitigate this brutality behavior to protect the employees from the sexual harassment at work place, and should create excellent complaint information system where employees can reach without any hesitation. Also conducting deep investigation on reported cases and punish offender will discourage the repetition of incident.

Having sexual harassment at work place will negatively effect on employees, employers and society. Therefore, we must take every action to eliminate this disreputable activity.

    The #MeToo movement has proven, just because harassment in the workplace may not be visible, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. So the companies should use sexual harassment training programs that include pre-training, training and post-training components at the individual and group levels.

  2. Author has chosen different topic than the common topics. Better if the author could talk about the status of sexual harassment in sri lanka too. Lack of cases of work place sexual harassment indicate the reluctance of women to report this intolerable offence (Wikramasinghe and Jayathilaka, 2006).It also reflects inability of the law to understand the women's experience. Following reasons can be taken as the reasons for this reluctance.
    1.Lack of encouragement by the criminal justice and law enforcement authorities for complaints on sexual harassment.
    2.Fear of making matter worse.
    3.Fear of harm to one's name and reputation.
    4.Considering sexual harassment as a common practice in the work place.
    5.Lack of awareness about the legal relief.
    6.The absence of sexual harassment prevention policies in the work place.
    7.The common practice of blaming victim-survivors rather than the aggressor.
    8.Low self-esteem. (Nivedini-Journal of gender studies, 2014)

  4. Victims of sexual harassment often suffer emotional and psychological harm, including stress, depression, and anxiety. They often experience decreased confidence and self-esteem.
    Harassments in the workplace can cause anxiety, stress, fear and even affect mental and physical health for the employees experiencing it. As a result, their productivity and efficiency are negatively affected, making the organization's performance deteriorate as well.

Sexual harassment is a criminal offense in the world therefore this is happening everywhere in the world mostly from top management to lower categories in the organization , due to this reason most Valuable employees are leaving and this cause to revenue losses and bad reputation to the organization in the sector and author has well explained about this topic
