Introduction 

Business attire can be described as employees dress code which they wear at the working place. Dress code can be identified as formal or informal ways to be worn appropriately as per situation. This may  differ as per the organization requirement and environment. Some organizations use the professional outfits to improve their reputation as well, its reflects professionalism and dedication to the organization.

According to Refaeli & Pratt, (1993) organizational attire influence several organizational dynamics. Also work attire affects the extent to which employees fulfill role requirement, indicate creditability, influence organizational image and helps identify authority within the organization. 

HR Role on Dress code

While protecting the employees rights and avoiding discrimination, some organizations are required to develop the dress and appearance policies. Human recourse management department regularly designs and oversees these policies.
The following guide lines has been set by Agarapathana Plantations Limited HR department to design a suitable dress code.
  • Identify the job role and set the work attire accordantly.
  • Identify and mitigate legal issues on police making of consultations with legal department. 
  • The policy should not be restricted to religious beliefs and ethnicity.
  • Obtain feedback from the employees for further improvement.
  

Types of Dress Codes

There are several types of professional dress code which are been used by organizations around the world.

Formal Business Attire



Employees working in banking, accounting, insurance and finance are subject to visit customers, visitors and clients. They are working in a more professional environment than the other employees. Therefore, wearing formal business attire is mandatory to them to keep high reputation and elevate organizational performance. World leading companies such as Berkshire Hathaway, Ping an insurance group and HSBC bank adopt this formal business attire.

Business Casual Attire



Most of the executives who work in a technological environment specially in constructions sites and manufacturing plants wear this business casual dress. The dress policy and restrictions is less than formal attire. This is more comfortable at work and allow employees be free and creative. For a example Apple, Foxconn and Hitachi companies have been using this business casual dress.

Summer Casual Attire



This is most comfortable dress code in the business world. There are no hard and fast rules and regulations, but to wear what employees desire as per the situation and working environment. Artists, software engineers and E-business employees mostly wear casual dress when they at work. Microsoft, Google and Facebook employees can freely wear any casual attire. Additionally film makers such as Universal pictures, Sony pictures and Castle rock entertainment use summer casual dress policy.

Conclusion

Professional dress codes refer the organizational environment, attitude and nature of the business. In the modern world it is important to wear modest, comfortable and professional clothing as per the organization requirement as it reflects the organization image.

  1. In my own experience, pre-pandemic, I've found myself standing in front of the mirror assessing an outfit which meet workplace dress policies and standards. But suddenly all changed with Covid 19 pandemic. As an employee of a state bank, my office dress code relaxed and we are permitted to wear suitable dress which can be easily supported with the new health guide lines. According to Kilfoil (2021), Covid19 pandemic disrupted workplaces look like, work attire and dress at work.

  2. As the author says, dress code makes the reputation. But according to the situation, it is easy and flexible to work with relaxed dress codes than with the professional uniforms that makes the work uncomfortable. In such situations like nowadays. Any body can work freely without bothering about the dress code.

  3. Dress code is very important for some jobs. Never wear jeans, athletic apparel or athletic footwear. Offensive T-shirts, distracting jewelry and rips in clothing are not appropriate in a business professional dress code. But under this pandemic situation most of organizations are allow to wear a free dress code to their employees. In my view point as a banker I must have a good understand about the dress code, because we met lot of customers and we must protect our job loyalty among the customers.

As mentioned it is the dress code of the employee which make the 1st impression on someone and that really make a strong image about the personality of the employee in the workplace.
